Might the daughter and her family move to Nevada? They too might welcome the much lower taxes and COL. Are they outdoorsy? If so, my city of Las Vegas has a lot to offer. Take it from resident Alex Honnold of "Free Solo" fame. An article that popped up today:

If the answer is no, then even though I share the OP's aversion to high taxes and a VHCOL, I'd move to San Diego, but to a facility.
I'm in the same age bracket as the OP, with no local (or distant) relatives, and healthy thus far, but I wrestle all the time with "what's next?" I've decided that any move from my house would be to a senior facility: an independent living/assisted living facility or a CCRC (Nevada has only one, here in Las Vegas). It would be foolish, I think, to downsize to a condo or to a smaller, newer house only to find that I have to go through the huge disruption of a move all over again, this time to a facility, a couple years later.
I may just stay put, avoiding a lengthy, effortful, stressful disruption of the possibly few good years left to me, and opt eventually for an unorthodox solution that probably wouldn't appeal to the OP and/or his wife.
