I don't understand how the OP knows the landlord is 1) CEO of a company and 2) has more money than them. Even more so if there are brokers in the middle.

I am a LL and don't use brokers, every tenant (besides a couple I inherented) I met at the initial showings all the up to signing the leases. None of my tenants know how much money I have or make, only a few know what my "day job" is and they only know because it came up in conversation.

I have heard over the years that some LL don't want to rent to lawyers or police officers for reasons already stated; they are more likely to be a PITA and use the law as leverage against the LL.
The broker told me the owner is a CEO of a big company and that they have hundreds of millions of dollars (which is indeed more money than I have). I met the owner today with the broker and they talked *to my face* about the holdover concern and all the things I might do, while saying it wasn’t personal. And then the broker told me afterward the owner wondered if I could really afford it.

Since the original ad, they’ve added all kinds of additional terms, including 4 months prepayment, extra fees and charges, references including one from my co-op board and a holdover clause whereby $50k is due if one overstays. If this were 50 years ago, I’d have gotten angry. Instead I just took in the scene as just part of the majestic variety of human experience. It was a little like being in a comedy of errors.

I admit to being left with an unsettled feeling. Thinking back, It was only as a college student that I ever encountered an unwilling landlord. I think it’s just bungling, inexperience or some weird prejudice of an unknown kind, but I lost interest.
Additional terms in the new ad suggest that this had nothing to do with your profession, age or gender.
BTW: if this is in NYC, prepaid rent >1 month is illegal
There was only one ad. Those modifications were terms they dished out to me in person.
I misread your post. My apologies.
This “personal” treatment does smack of discrimination
