I use the WF Autograph card I mentioned above to get 3% on those with no annual fee.Yes, but the preferred card give 3% back on trains, taxicabs, ride share services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways too.Blue cash everyday is pretty good for no fee. 3% groceries, gas and online retail for first $6000 in each.
The preferred card gives 6% on groceries and streaming up to $6000, and 3% gas, but no bonus on online retail. And it has a $95 fee.
Since both do 3% gas we will ignore that for the comparison
So if you max out the rewards, you get $180 groceries + $180 online retail = $360 on the no fee card.
On the preferred you get $360 groceries - $95 fee = $265. You'd need to spend a lot on that 6% streaming to break even.
Also the comparison I made above isn't perfect because the Preferred card gets 1% on any non category expenses, including online retail. So $6000 spending on Online Retail and $6000 in groceries would actually be $360 + $60 -$95 = 325 vs $360 on the Everyday card. So you'd only need to make an extra $35 in streaming or taxis to break even.
The preferred card is particularly a bad deal if you are not spending near the full $6000 on groceries. The Everyday comes out ahead on groceries up to $3200 in grocery spend, not including any online retail spend.
