I was among those caught unaware. My traditional three fund portfolio and my target date funds both had a lot of exposure to total bond market. In retrospect, I would have owned the TSP G Fund instead. Live and learn.
I note that the Vanguard target date funds are still heavily invested in the total bond market. 2022 does not appear to have changed their thinking at all, at least for those at least a few years out from retirement, though obviously the magnitude of the interest rate risk today is more modest than it was when rates were very low in 2019-20.
