Although if you're coming from Mackinaw, you won't have to worry about sitting in traffic on the bridge approach, unless you're coming from UP/WI/OntarioWe spend time on Mackinac Island every summer. It is one my family's favorite places. The Grand Hotel is our choice but there are many nice hotels on the Island.
I would not worry about the ferry but if you're concerned the trip from St Ignace is shorter than from Mackinaw. Time on the Island with a small child will be fine, probably easier than the long drive to the tip of the mitt.
