OP: perhaps there is confusion about your original question. Some folks answered the question in your post heading "Asset Allocation - Do You Include Cash?"Yep, all valid, Klangfool.
In 2020, I was not holding a lot of cash, so a totally different scenario than what I am asking about now.
So then, yes, I rebalanced between stocks and bonds, but that was not the original question.
But in reading your original full post, it appears you are asking:
What is the standard way Bogleheads Posters express their cash holdings when referring to their investment portfolio?
Is this your question? if so, it is clear from the myriad answers here that there is no standard. You bring up an important point and a standard might be helpful.
From what I have read (CFAInstitute.org, Investopedia.com, Investor.gov), CASH that is part of an investment portfolio would be included in AA. So MM, HYSA, any CASH within IRAs, 401Ks, etc, would be included (and likely subject to rebalancing). CASH in an EF, checking account, regular saving, under the mattress, etc., are not invested per se and probably should not be included in AA for purposes of Boglehead investment discussions.
I'm not an expert by any stretch. Maybe someone with more experience and education can clarify CASH & AA further as it pertains to Boglehead concepts? In the end we all want to understand how CASH as an investment can work for us.
thanks for bringing this up!
