Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Is Calif Really That Expensive - Or Am I Missing Something?

This is not an unusual conversation for Californians (and Nevadans). As I was boarding my plane in Las Vegas for Los Angeles many years ago, the boarding agent said something like, "Enjoy your trip back to Tax Land."
I would have considered contacting the carrier over this remark. As someone who lived in CA for 67 years of my soon to be 72, it amazes me how people you are paying to do business with feel free to throw out insults about California, which are largely something they've heard, not something they've experienced.

It's gotten to a point, especially lately, that former Californians are reluctant to say where they come from lest they be bombarded with comments about how you must be so happy to be away from all that (fill in the blank).

For my money, it is the best place to live in the country depending on where you're talking about, if you can afford it. An earlier comment mentioned the big winners as those who've lived there and who have owned their home for a long time. That was us. The problem is selling and upgrading to a nicer house in the same general location. If you are of average means, and don't want to die with a mortgage, that is impossible. If you don't mind being forever in debt in order to buy the home you always dreamed of, then it isn't an issue.

One other aspect I haven't seen mentioned is competition. California has 39.24 million residents, Nevada has 3.14 million. A business in California does not survive if it doesn't deliver quality because there is always someone else who can do it better if you can't. California attracts young talent who want to be paid better than where they came from, which also drives competition and increases overall quality.

No place is perfect, but if money wasn't an issue I would pick California every time.
