Personal Finance (Not Investing) • I feel like I cannot afford where I currently live. Should I move cities?

I think if I had a second income from a spouse I would be content, but I can't rely on that. If I were to move to a place like Texas I would have an additional $20-25k/year in my pocket, at the expense of being unhappy with my lifestyle.
Or you can get a raise for 40-50k and stay in NY and enjoy your job and life.

You don’t need to move to Texas to save 20k. Just get more income. Also Can you imagine a year from now living in Arlington and saying “wow my life is such much better since I left my friends and NY life now that I have a car and this extra 20k in the bank, for 420k portfolio size instead of 400k”? I don’t think that’s the right tradeoff.

I really think the most actionable advice I can give is

1) you’re doing well, just be patient. Financial independence takes time.
2) study and go interview for a new IC engineering job in the next 3 months. Maybe get a raise that way
3) consider management, consider tech
4) get more social and professional connections in NYC. They will help you grow your career and navigate life. I also live in NY and am around your age. Feel free to message me. NYC is a great place to build a career and community.
