Another big wrinkle in this analysis is a spouse's earning potential. I just wrote about this yesterday. I've said many times before that there are plenty of good reasons for an officer to exit before 20 years of service, but making more money, for the average officer, probably shouldn't be one of them. However, if exiting allows one's spouse to go from being unemployed / underemployed to starting a professional career, then that can really alter the financial analysis.
