I'm not really sure what the OP is getting at.

But I'll guess that he is wondering about the end of 2023 value vs. that of 2022. The difference would be what he has called "the growth." Then you would plug "the growth" into calculations for his four cases.
Yes, thank you, that's what I was asking. We got a bit sidetracked from that but good discussion. If anyone could answer that part, about the % of growth in the categories, for VTI and VGIT in 2023 thank you.
Ask your AI:

For VTI, tell me the percentage of simple interest paid in 2023. 0.0%. (But I think you would use 1-.9639 instead. That would be the unqualified dividends.)

For VTI, calculate the total performance change from 2022 to 2023. 26.05%.

For VTI, tell me the percentage of qualified dividends from 2023. 96.39%.

For VTI, tell me the percentage of capital gains for 2023. 0.0%.

In the final calculation, you'd provide a typical investment amount, like $10,000.

Your tax rate of course is needed.

Your income level affects how qualified dividends are taxed, or not.

With a spreadsheet in front of you, you can enter various columns, use formulas, and come up with final answers that apply to you.
