And sometimes it can be effective to explicitly foreclose possibilities to allow you to focus yourself.

My son was waitlisted by a possibly better college than the one that accepted him. I looked at the stats and they took about 5% of folks off the waitlist in a prior year. Maybe a little higher if you consciously reached out to them and begged for a spot.

You had to choose whether to accept their wait list spot offering or not. Our son declined the spot (on our recommendation), in part because the mental uncertainty and whatnot of spending ~April through ~July not knowing where he'd be going to college and not *locking in* on the college that DID accept him was not worth the small % chance that the (possibly) better college would accept him off the waitlist.
