Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Letter to heir - what would you include?

OP,
the most powerful thing I heard was from the lawyer that worked with my mom and I on her will.
She talked about the power of a letter that told why a certain memento was given to them and why it was meaningful.
To me this is something i want them to remember about me and it's not cash.

At the end of the day, it's just money. (and i know i will get flamed for this)

you can write a book telling your heirs how to spend it. They will either disregard you as they have most of your life on money or get so tied up in your letter they will feel guilty spending it. (the two extremes or something in between)

i agree with not suggesting a sabbatical. They are adults, at least i hope so. I probably would preface your "suggestions" as suggestions and say they can do what they want (because they can anyway) but you would suggest the following.

if I started a letter like yours, my oldest son would "check out" figuring dad was still trying to be in charge. Of course, your relationship is probably better than mine but that's my 2 cents.
