Personal Finance (Not Investing) • New Mexico road trip during Christmas

We are thinking of visiting Museum of Space history, White Sand national park and New mexico rails to trails. What are things to do in white sand national park during winter. Are there any lively towns near by?
Drive in the park, park the car, hike up a sand dune, slide down it, do it again and walk around in the sand, basically.

But there is no guarantee that the park will be fully open. Sometimes military tests shut down access to the park, sometime a military plane crashes in the park (which recently happened), so be aware.

Lively towns nearby? Uh, no. Alamogordo is nothing fancy. Las Cruces is nice. College town. Eat at Habaneros if you can, with a stop at Caliche’s for desert (they have locations in Roswell and Alamogordo too, all with the same offerings), although winter isn’t exactly the best time to eat frozen custard. COAS bookstore is in Las Cruces and worth a stop if you like perusing and buying old books.

I guess you might as well hit up Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Peak while you are in the area.

Roswell has a decent art museum and rocketry museum (I think it is in the same building), and of course a very amateurish UFO museum. Martin’s Capitol Cafe was a great place to eat years ago and might still be.
