Personal Finance (Not Investing) • How to count a pension in net worth calculations

For what it’s worth, we have received almost $575,000 from social security and pensions since 2017.
We have spent about $350,000 to $400,000 in the same time. Thus our portfolio has increased by $430,000 in the same amount of time. Not spending the total of our pensions/ssi has helped a bit. It’s a little like not having to spend your RMD if you don’t need to.
I remember before retirement I put values on our future earnings from the pension/ssi. When we finally did retire, the yearly pension/ssi amount when we did retire was not $28,000, but $72,000. Life is very good.
Our net worth included the monetary value of the money saved in the pension. After retiring, it disappeared. I love having a pension and social security and am not bothered by having to pay taxes on our earnings. In a way it’s like we never stopped working.
I also remember in some Boglehead conversations in the past that having a million in net worth was not as important as having a million in your portfolio. And then someone said if you are a working couple, you should have $2 million. That was a little discouraging to me, so to stroke my ego I included the value of the pensions/ssi in my net worth.😇😚
