Personal Consumer Issues • Payment platforms (p2p) compared: PayPal and Cash App

I’ve used PayPal mostly for e-commerce transactions (like eBay) and to a lesser extent invoicing clients. You’ll often see the ability to pay through your PayPal account when making purchases from online retailer. This could provide something of a buffer between less-trusted merchants and your financial info but would not give you purchase protections offered by most credit cards. PayPal has its own “purchase protection” and dispute resolution system, but charges an extra percentage commercial transactions (usually covered by the seller). Venmo is their P2P-focused brand.

Cash App is an offshoot of Square—a popular payment processor for small brick and mortar retailers and pop-up vendors. You might see prompt to link your Cash App account to a loyalty program at checkout on their terminals.

I have a Cash App account (and have also used Square to accept card payments) but don’t currently have it installed or linked to my accounts for lack of use. Venmo is the most popular P2P network in my social circle.
