I believe the idea is that the battery will die from other causes before it is necessary to add water. In any case, do not add acid to the battery, just water.Thanks. One thing I have found is that the moniker "maintenance free" on a traditional lead-acid battery is a lie.
The battery must vent and in turn, will lose the amount of electrolyte mixture through charge cycles.
So while old batteries had fill caps on top that were easily accessed and filled, the new ones are hidden under the sticker.
You won't even know they are there unless you go looking for them.
And they are pushed in flush. You have to pick them out with a knife or pick to check the levels and fill if necessary.
I pulled mine about 2 years ago and found all cells low a significant amount. Filled to correct level and still using.
It's kind of like not putting dipsticks in engines and transmissions, labeling them "maintenance free" or "lifetime fluid".
None of it is true. What it really is-is "maintenance discouraged" for premature failure.
