Rent and taxes in coastal cities like New York and San Francisco will eat so much away from that. 250K/500K spending limit is mean to make members focus on elevating status through games of virtue rather than wealth signaling, you can be on minimum wage and still join since anyone can compete in games of virtue (like coaching and volunteering).A lot of the responses to the first thread were making fun of the concept that a 250k single / 500k married pretax spending limit would result in non-vain Stoic lifestyles. Maybe it's because I'm in a low cost of living area, but the idea seems really out of touch. I have never made anywhere near 250k and still consider myself to be well off (or well enough off, which is sufficient) especially relative to my expenses.
I worked at a very small startup years ago. I thought my coworker's spending on fancy cars was vain and overheard that he made well under 250k. I also appreciate that it's a free country and he likes cars.
Stoicism is seeing a renaissance these days, which is neat. The connection to an investment club with a 250k/500k spending limit seems tenuous. I don't know as much as I should about Stoicism, but I think it covers much more of life than how one handles money, although that would be included.
