That service provides:
1. An initial asset allocation informed and maintained with reference to Vanguard's proprietary Capital Markets Model. It is intended to result in a portfolio optimized for a client's risk tolerance and return objectives, to a greater extent than would result from more generic or all-purpose templates: https://corporate.vanguard.com/content/ ... casts.html
2. Regular portfolio reviews to evaluate potential rebalancing requirements and changes which might be appropriate due to changes in client circumstances.
3. A dedicated advisor and support team, available to respond to financial planning/investment questions or requested actions whenever needed.
4. Access to Vanguard's estate planning and other in-house SMEs, for second looks at client primary service provider products and recommendations
5. Access to Vanguard's fully-funded equity lending program.
6. Access to proprietary actively managed funds unavailable to non-PAS clients.
7. Access to Vanguard's private equity offerings.
8. Clients benefit from an on-line portal which provides modeling of portfolio growth or shrinkage at different points in time, and probabilities of portfolio survival, defined as not being depleted before the client's individual expiration date. The tool allows for modeling of the effects of changes to planned spending levels.
9. Help with various planning areas, such as access to Vanguard's Tax Efficient Retirement strategy, which combines recommendations of Social Security claiming age, account withdrawal order, and annual Roth conversion amount to help smooth lifetime taxes.
10. An objective 3rd-party sounding board for an investor's own ideas about asset allocation and other topics, which can be both intrinsically useful and also helpful when an investor and their spouse don't share identical risk tolerances.
11. Assistance in place and understood before it may be needed, and before portfolio damage may occur, in the event of investor cognitive or other disability.
12. Tax loss harvesting, if desired.
Whether any of these features represent value for money to any given investor is highly personal and depends, too, on the degree to which any given individual investor is able to outperform the service on a risk-adjusted total return basis, something which is difficult or impossible to predict in advance. As with all of Vanguard's advisor offerings, it's easy and simple to unenroll at any time if later dissatisfied with the value proposition.
