Ah ha! I think you are onto something #Cruncher. The OP has another thread where he reports he and his wife received an unexpected payment from Social Security: viewtopic.php?t=440407 A possible explanation discussed in that thread is that the OP, who has continued to work part-time since starting Social Security at age 70, may have earnings from last year that exceeded one of his highest 35 inflation adjusted earnings years, resulting in a recalculation of his 2024 PIA and a retroactive payment back to the start of 2024. A recalculation of his 2024 PIA would also affect his wife's spousal "add on" benefit and she in fact also received a small payment from Social Security.Could this refer to just the spousal component of her overall benefit?
So... it's possible this letter is informing the OP's wife that the spousal portion of her benefit is INCREASING for 2024. Her own benefit would be the same so overall, her combined benefit would be going up, not down.
OP: if you run your wife's earnings history through the ssa.tools calculator it will tell you your wife's 2024 PIA. I believe you posted that she started her benefit right at her Normal Retirement Age so her benefit should be the same as her PIA. Subtract that amount from the benefit she has been receiving (before they deduct for Medicare Part B, IRMAA and tax withholding) and what's left is the spousal add-on she has been receiving. How does that number compare to $1,201.40?
