Sorry to hear about your experience. Not to quibble with what happened to you, but I've rented from Sixt (only in the US) and have had good experiences.
But, as others have said, I approach rentals like an adversarial encounter - regardless of who I'm renting from. When I pick up the car, I do a careful walk around and note any blemish. Then I go back to the car rental counter and document it with them so I have a record of it before I leave with the car. When I drop it off, I make a video with my phone, noting the fuel gauge and then filming the car inside and out. It's a pain, but I too have heard a lot of car rental horror stories.
On the other hand, I did have a very good experience last year with Alamo. My wife's sister died suddenly and we flew down to Houston for the funeral. When we got to Houston, we jumped in the rental and headed straight for the funeral home, forgetting to look at the car before we left the airport.
When we got to the funeral home, I get out and notice a big scrape down the passenger side of the car, as if it had brushed against a post or something. Before going inside, I called Alamo and told them what I found. They said they'd make a note of it. I fully expected them to charge me for the damage, but I never heard another word.
