Grew up in the DMV and moved to Florida 5 years ago ish.
I don't know much about the city itself (museums are great, important buildings like the Capitol are cool too) but Northern VA was a great place to grow up at the time. It has waned but it is still a good place to raise a family. Be aware that the commute (anywhere) will be a slog likeable to the NY tri state and the cost of living is OUT OF CONTROL.
I am able to provide info on areas in Northern VA if you'd like to hear the scoop. I know Loudoun, PWC and Fairfax counties quite well, a pinch of Stafford and a bit of Fauqier County. DC is absurdly expensive and full of crime. It's hard for me to give you an unbiased opinion on Maryland because Virginians hate Maryland and vice versa, but suffice to say if you want a safe neighborhood Northern VA is the way to go. MD has higher taxes and a bit more of a car culture if that interests you. Their laws are stricter but people (and cops) seem to care less about them. VA is a little bit looser but upholds their laws firmly. Do not speed in Virginia.
I loved growing up in Northern VA. It was cool to be right in the middle of all the important stuff as it happened (although once you grow up you realize there's a dark side too). I hope you live somewhere HCOL already so the sticker shock won't be that bad though.
