Agree. Owned the house for 50 years? Maybe they thought you said fish tank
It's a strange one.

But we have had a house in the family for over 60 years. Things do get forgotten. People age. The spouse who looked after these things dies or loses their memory. Something Dad said to Mum 50 years ago? I can think of a few things we'd like to know - but wouldn't know where it was recorded. And the contractor who did all the work on the house is also long gone. (Our oil tank was above ground, mercifully).

If they've been in that house for 50 years, I imagine they are in their 80s (or 90s) and possibly moving to a retirement home situation? Or one of the children may be managing the sale?

The sellers absolutely have to rectify and get the appropriate certifications. Because our poster here will be faced with the same questions when they sell in 20,30.40+ years time.
Oil heating isn't something that one forgets. It is expensive and a big deal to convert from oil to natural gas. Houses heated with oil also have a particular odor indoors. There is an old oil tank in my basement, so I know what everyone is talking about. Late 1970s though? I thought most furnaces were natural gas by then. If this is a house that was built at the same time as the houses around it, one could ask the neighboring property owners. I like to walk around the neighborhood and talk to the dog-walkers who live nearby. They are usually willing to chat about houses.
