Investing - Theory, News & General • Can index funds ‘dry up’?

I was pondering a question about index funds.

So:

Presumably companies that issue stock (e.g Apple) have a finite number of shares they can issue.

If that’s true, as investors keep on buying index funds / stock, is there a scenario where index funds could dry up?

Can anyone explain this to me like I’m 5?
