Personal Finance (Not Investing) • $30k Vacation Home

Putting aside anything about real estate in Cambodia which I know nothing about, a vacation home that is a five hour drive means 1) it's not a weekender and 2) it's probably not worth it for 4 weeks of use per year unless you can rent it out to recover the cost. And presumably in the Cambodian climate it will require a ton of general upkeep.

(We have a cabin that's about 3.5 hours away by car and we virtually never go there for less than a three day weekend, and even that seems short with 7-8 hours of driving. I prefer 4 nights minimum.)

If you plan to retire in the US you'll have some number crunching to do as you're probably not going to be living on the $30k you are now.
