Personal Investments • Is psychology the only reason to not stick with 80-20 asset allocation?

Seems OK OP. The other factor though is amount relative to expenses -

The closer I am to having only the amount I need to retire (say 25x expenses is my minimum) the more conservative I'd personally be - there's less leeway to tolerate a long downturn.

I'm about 70-30 at this point. All of my retirement funds and 10% of taxable are 60-40s but I have some taxable equity stuff that's grown over the last 3 years. A nice problem to have but I've overshot 25X as a result of market action while consulting work paid more consistently than I'd thought.

I'm actually adding to equities in taxable after filling retirement with 60-40. In part because I don't want any more bonds in my taxable and in part because the market's ensured my bases are covered. Of course the "you've won, so why play the game" approach of going more conservative has logic too. I'll go with the opportunity for larger gains and possibly taking a few more vacations down the road!
