The point was a typical sign up bonus is way more lucrative than teh difference between 3% cashback and 2.5% cashback
This is my starting point too. I +/- figure that I am limited to two cards per year per person. Two for me and two for spouse if I want each card to give me at least $500. A 3% card without other benefits would meet that mark at 500/0.03 = $16.66K purchases a year just on it.
