As someone who dealt with this issue for my dad (stopping driving at about age 87), it is easier said than done. Until you walk in the shoes of someone having this discussion, you just don't know.

After my dad blasted through the wall, he blamed "sudden acceleration," and he kept driving. We continued to discuss. A few months later, he said he thought he was done driving. My siblings and I literally, I mean literally, drove him down to Carmax a few hours later and sold the car. His license came up for renewal a few months later and I took him through the "ID only" line.

It was a very difficult process. And I look at myself and know I'll be on the other side some day, God willing.
The hope is that by the time that comes for any of us ... driverless cars will be a real concept. None of us will then own cars. We will just call for a car to appear for wherever our starting point is.

With me currently driving only about 4,000 miles a year that means my car is only being used about 3 hours a week and sits for the other 165 hours of the week.
