See Jason Zweig in the WSJ, How Not to Invest in the Bond Market.

"Bond Funds" (and ETFs) are a black-box as far as I can see it, and not a good investment compared to just buying a bond.
After a bad experience with the VG Short Term Bond Fund, I'm putting most of my fixed income into actual TIFS (not any kind of "fund"), with the remainder in the VG Federal MMF. The Boglehead consensus seems to be that the current "real rate" makes them a good deal at this time.
