No, your domain can only point to one email provider. If you want a very complicated configuration, you can kind of work around this, but it is generally not a good idea.Sorry for causing any confusion. You DO NOT need to transfer your domain to use Proton Mail. You just need to add an MX record. This can be done at your DNS provider, which is usually where you registered your domain, but it can be separate as well. This not a simple affair!
Proton Mail started looking good.
I read some there and it directed me to to go to my Registrar's DNS Console to transfer.
I was not actually going to do this but I wanted to start to familiarize myself with what I'd have to do.
I've looked all over and cannot find anything related to DNS related to my domain with this Registrar.
But one good part of the exercise is that I discovered that Whois had an email address for me that has not existed since 2007 and has my landline phone number rather than my cell phone number.
I made the necessary changes and was about to Save Changes when up pops up:
"The changes you have made will enable the IRTP Transfer Lock for this domain"
Did a search on that and discovered that ICANN prevents one from transferring the domain within 60 days of making these changes. Since my domain renews on July 6th that would prevent me from transferring, if that is what I wanted to do.
But there is also a check box: "Opt-out of Transfer Lock (if available)", which it seems I should check off so I don't have to wait the 60 days.
Did it with the response of: "Changes Saved Successfully!"
It also appears also that I have successfully found where I can point to ProtonMail or anyone else via here?
"Nameservers
You can change where your domain points to here. Please be aware changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate."
Currently it is pointing to two Nameservers (identical names except the second one has a "2" added to its name).
Does this mean I could point email to be going to multiple email recipients? In theory, keep them going where they are going plus have them go to Proton Mail?
As you can see I have a lot of basic questions.
You will also want to setup SPF, DKIM and DMARC after you get everything moved over.
Yes, I was aware it is not necessary to transfer my domain to use Proton Mail. But I'm examining both parts - domain & email - and I may want to change both or keep domain where it is and change my email to something like Proton Mail.
My question, however, still remains. Can email continue to go where it is going plus the same email also going to Proton Mail (or some other)?
At this point ... this is all foreign to me: "You will also want to setup SPF, DKIM and DMARC after you get everything moved over."
SPF, DKIM and DMARK are validation protocols. If you misconfigure or do not configure these, email you send will typically be marked as spam. They are just DNS records, updated the same way you add the MX record(s) I previously mentioned.
I would transfer the domain if you are paying more than $15/year. Cloudflare is excellent, as previously mentioned.
