Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Will home owner's policy cover sewer repair cost?

We have woken up two months ago with sewer spilling from our bathtub, toilet and sink into the furnished basement. This has been repaired by local plumber company for a total of $13,000. We paid for this from our emergency fund. However we were wondering whether home owner's insurance would typically pick up portion of this bill. Or would it be even worth submitting this claim to insurance company? I don't want our home owner's insurance rates to go through the roof but at the same time $13k is not an insignificant amount of money. This is our first house and we really don't know what's the best way to go about this.
Typically when this happens, you should to call your insurance agent's office and have them send an inspector. If you or your family have a lengthy relationship with the insurance agent/office (40 years for us) they may authorize the repair & reimbursement right over the phone.

You can submit home repair claims after the fact, the time limit varies by State and policy. Review the insurance policy then visit your agent's office to discuss the matter.
