OP is the recipient. It’s on the purchaser to be diligent about not being scammed by OP.

If a phishing attempt is made, that’s another matter. Don’t fall for phishing attempts. What OP described has in no way put him at risk.

No you showed a con/scam that is not related to what OP was concerned about...giving out phone number. The scam you showed is not Zelle specific, not electronic funds specific, heck not even internet specific. That con has been going on for decades before the internet or even personal computers existed. It used to be done by phone. Or by postal mail. Before that it was done in person. If you chose to hand over money to the con man, odds are slim you get any back. But that is not a problem with Zelle or giving out a phone number.

You need to send money to someone to lose it. Just like you could write them a check or hand them cash (but at least with a check you have some time to stop payment.)

Phishing might be a new hi tech term but con men have been tricking people to give away their money for centuries. Probably since not long after the first money existed and maybe even bofore.
