Personal Consumer Issues • When to switch from dealer to independent for service

I think it is smart to cultivate / spend time finding a good independent mechanic. I would estimate mine has saved me more than 25K - 30K if not more over the last 20 years. We have evolved to owning 3 used cars. 2016 Honda accord w/ 30K miles, 2011 Lexus RX with 76K miles, and a 2014 Sienna with 75K miles. When a car is in need of a repair (rare for Honda / Toyota imho) we drop it by Ben’s (he has a lift in his house garage) and in a few days he checks it out. Our biggest expense is brakes / rotors on occasion (no Ben mark up for parts) or tires which we shop independently by price checking with tire rack.

I usually add $20-30 dollars to what Ben charges for a tip. He does minor body work too as well as keeps our riding lawn mower working. Need to take a life insurance policy out on him.
