Finished two books:
Cloud Cukoo Land - Anthony Doerr. Was this fantasy? Historical fiction? Definitely, the book is quite the tangle of different genres. The book follows 5 different people living in 3 distinct eras, from the 1400s to modern times, to the future. It was a long book but with the relatively short chapters, it was easy to read. I actually enjoyed the book. But after I finished, I was a bit unsatisfied. What was the point of what I just read?
A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century - Barbara Tuchman. A very dense, detailed, and long narrative of events happening in the 14th century, primarily in France and England. There is so much going on here that it's nearly impossible to describe this book. But in general, I think the framework can be said to revolve around The Hundred Years Wars, the Papal Schism, and the re-occurrences of the Black Plague. Sometimes it was a grind to get through, but I enjoyed learning about a historical era that I did not know much about.
