Personal Consumer Issues • Carry on luggage: wheeled vs. backpack vs. duffle vs. combo? Best price range?

I just bought a 40L travel backpack (around $40) for an overseas trip that includes a discount carrier with severe size and weight restrictions for carry-on. Didn't want half of weight allowance to be used up by a 7 lb wheeled suitcase. Goal is to travel 10 days using the backpack and personal item.
