"Are there any Boglehead ESG investors on here? How did you get started, and how do you find a decent fund?"
Earlier in life, I held a portion of my investments in Calvert funds. They did great things with the money and the returns were often below inflation. IMO, they are the real deal.
Currently, one of the investment committees that I serve on for a small endowment has some money in the VG's ESG ETF. I have mixed feeling about it for reasons that you and others have mentioned. My observation is the comparable market returns and truly responsible investments are not aligned. Two things to make sure that you understand when reviewing investments are the fund fees (it take labor to review and monitor business practices) and compare the sector mix to VTSAX. You may or may not be comfortable with the sector mix compared to the index. I would expect higher concentration in tech for instance in an ESG fund, at least the three that I reviewed when we selected the VG ESG ETF.
I do not own that fund in my personal holdings. If and when I want to return to SRI investing, I would look again to Calvert or similar and expect returns to reflect that choice.
