Primecap came to my attention in the mid 1990s when a colleague at a think tank I worked at asked if I had an explanation for the over-performance of this fund among the choices we had. The 401K plan was administered by TIAA-CREF. At the time, I basically stuck everything in CREF stock and never paid any attention to it since it was, at time, closest thing we had to a low cost index fund. If I remember correctly, looking at the historical numbers, it basically returned around 2% over the market on a pretty consistent basis. As a result, I decided to put my Roth IRA investments in it, and later bought Prime Cap core in a taxable account before Vanguard closed it. The latter turned out to be a mistake once the investment grew past half million or so and I started to notice all the cap gains it was throwing off. Anyway, first world problems .....
