Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Can we retire in NYC?

2. How much of a house should we buy? Can we afford? Many friends of ours are buying $2M houses in the NYC area, I find it astounding that $1M houses are not in livable shape here, I can't in my right mind buy a $2M house, that seems insane.
Here a 1 bed + loft condo is $1.1 million:

But if you go to Rancho Palos Verdes (Los Angeles) you can buy a big house on quarter acre lot for $1.5-$2 million with cool ocean breeze. Good schools too.

If you’re burned out in NYC, consider looking further distance for affordable homes, good neighborhood, good schools, etc.

Take your family on vacation to Atlanta Georgia, drive up to Johns Creek area. Check out the newish homes and prices, the neighborhood, schools, etc. There are many nice areas across the country. Take a break and go travel & look around.

You have enough FAANG stocks to sell and buy a nice home with big yard & fruit trees in a nice neighborhood, you just need to get out of NYC.

If you feel that you are over exposed to individual stocks and crypto, reduce some holdings and put the money in index funds. See what you’re comfortable with, it’s not all or nothing decision.
