I did not see this thread when it started, I was out of town.
I have had UW for my health care since the late 1980s, at times I had good luck with them and at times bad. Never got perturbed enough to switch to someone else.
Most of that time I had an employer that offered several different health care plans in the county, so I had annual opportunities to switch. I have had employer coverage all this time. I retired 14 years ago, but I can still get medical coverage from my former employer plan for a fee. And five years ago when I turned 65, I got a employer plan with medicare.
Thus, I am clueless on ACA. And am clueless about medical insurance options.
In the past several years, my complaints about UW Health are that they always are short staffed when trying to schedule anything.
Example, when I am supposed to get a free eye exam once a year thru my insurance, scheduling that exam in less than 14 months is very difficult. My Dr, at times he is booked out for three or four months. Etc.
Many of the UW Health staff are associated with the med school. My Ophthalmologist is also a prof there. My Doctor is not with the med school, but the clinic is, so sometimes when I see him, he has a med student observing. I do not mind that, but if you would mind that, I am just giving you a heads up. They always ask if I mind if a med school student observes first, I always tell them that it is fine with me.
About 12 years ago one of their surgeons screwed up my shoulder. Two years later another one on their staff fixed most of the damage from the first one. That is the only bad experience I have had with their medical staff. And other than that one experience, I think their staff are very competent.

Local Boggleheads group? I never heard of one. But maybe one exists? If there was one, I would probably not participate, so maybe there is and I forgot about it?

I usually Canoe on Lake Wingra, but it is quite weedy late in the season. It is close to my condo and motorboats on that lake are quite restricted. There are other places to canoe too, I might go to Devils Lake State Park in a week or two to take a spin or two around the lake.
It is a bike friendly city. If you are more interested in getting out of town on the DNR bike paths (rail trails), most of those are gravel. Thus a mountain bike or gravel bike might suit you better than a skinny tire road bike. I usually use 37mm or 57mm width tires on the gravel trails. But some are paved. For the DNR trails, an annual trail pass is $25. Many people commute by bike in spring thru fall.
They are making some major changes to their mass transit system design, lots of construction associated with that at this time. If you might want to use mass transit, you should try to figure out what the system will look like when it is done if using mass transit may be part of your decision on where in the area you want to live.
Madison airport is one of the most expensive airports to fly out of, and direct flights to anywhere that is not a hub are minimal at best. Sometimes I have taken a bus to Milwaukee or Chicago to fly out of instead, frequent bus options from UW campus. Last month, I took a bus from UW campus to Chicago Amtrak station, later returned the same way.
