Personal Finance (Not Investing) • One spouse retiring earlier than the other?

The perceived joys of retirement are way different than reality.

I have friends who are retired, all at different ages, but the vast majority of them (the health ones) hate retirement after about a year of getting all those honey do jobs completed. You can only vacation, walk in the park, and play with the grand kids so much.

Loss of income, loss of social contacts, loss of a structured something to do. A few rejoice, many regret.

Better think long and hard, its a decision that for the most part you cant un-do!
Well said. Most of my family who retired with plenty of cash, for the most part, are terrible at retirement.

When one retires earlier than the other spouse, it is critical that the retired spouse does not drive the working spouse crazy with leaching and moping around, and boredom. I’ve seen it lead to divorce.

I retired 4 years ago. Wife still working. I’m building our home. She is busy working from current home. It works out great because she works her butt off and I work my butt off.
