Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Kids' IRS Form 8606 - Done Correctly?

While the CPA is probably personally capable of correctly filing your return, when they hire a "trainee" or any new employee, any competent accountant will have all data input checked by reliable staff prior to the efile. Not doing so is a serious oversight and sign of gross mismanagement. If these flawed returns went on unchecked for even a week, upset clients will be lining up for several months or even into next year as they or the IRS discovers the errors over a period of time.

If bad enough it could be very costly for the CPA. At some point, there might even be sanctions from the IRS.

If amended returns are otherwise not needed because the 8606 forms were the only errors, you could file amended 2023 8606 forms by themselves correcting the contributions to 0. That will be simple.
I would argue that this should be done even if the original preparer is fully capable and trained. This, among other reasons is why I would only use a firm that has enough qualified staff to do the job.

In Taxaide last year I saw a number of wrong returns filed by a one-person shop in the area. Some were done during the pandemic but some were more recent. Frankly, I was shocked by the nature of some of the errors.
