But how many families can afford 6 cars? I'm talking in the real world not the Boglehead world....

The OP is going to be paying around what the average mortgage payment is for car insurance. :shock:
6 cars can be surprisingly cheap. I knew a single guy once who had more than 6. Not because he was rich, but because they were all older vehicles he acquired for very little, he could fix anything himself, and they were old enough to be permanently registered in that state so registration cost nothing.

Usually when a family has 6 cars they are 1-2 nice cars and 4-5 older, cheaper vehicles. I've definitely seen plenty of families with 2 cars that spent more on the 2 cars than some people would spend on 6. States with a break on older registrations help.

As per the source of this thread insurance is usually the big if factor in how expensive this might be. But just the vehicles themselves need not be expensive.
