That's the only reason I've come up with. My iIRA came with a pile of all kinds of high-load funds that I spent a while researching as to how much I wanted to keep them--some of them weren't terrible (past the already-sunk cost of the sales load) but none were compelling. I sold everything but others may choose differently.I could see doing an in-kind transfer if the IRA contents were some sort of special-case issue which is hard or costly to acquire, and which you want to retain for some reason.
If my iIRA at Schwab goes up enough I might cash it out for a day to buy SNAXX (MM with $1M minimum buy-in, 5.29%) so that I can transfer some in-kind to taxable later.
