re: G-fund vs anything else, it isn't like it has to be a one-time one-way decision. It is very easy to swap between G and any Treasury based MMF when the rates cross. The only caveat, and I know it's a big one, is that you have to have another tax advantaged account with enough assets to make a difference.
And in fact I did that between my military TSP and my post-retirement employers 401k who provides access to VMRXX Vanguard Cash Reserves Federal MM which is currently at 5.28%. I shifted all of my G-fund into C/S at 4/1 ratio and I shifted the same amount of my 401k's Total Market Trust into VMRXX. I did this very soon after the two of them crossed and I'll do it again when they cross again.
