I dont think we will do a rental car on this visit but have looked at threads on rental car insurance for the UK/Ireland and are educating ourselves. IF we did do a rental it's likely only be for the Galway/west Ireland area. Just not sure I want to undertake left sided driving for the first time esp off of the expressways/major highways as its the intersections, the narrow unlined rural ways, and the roundabouts that give me pause. I am not an inexperienced driver ( I've w2w'd and am a National Trained HPDE instructor for the PCA and have a lot of time at speed on circuits albeit in an arse-engined car ) BUT I know one thing as fact from right seat coaching/instruction and that is that one reverts to old muscle memory when faced with a fight-or-flight scenerio, real or imagained; and, well, not sure I want to stress it or put the necessary energy/concentration/attentiveness in to do places like those mentioned up-thread ( at least on the first trip over - If i've seen/expereinced the traffic conditions first hand I'd be much more comfortable re holding my own ) .. Thanks TheDogFather for confirming the approximate travel time/distance between the two cities as that is about what we thought. It's not far from Dublin to Galway ... just over two hours by car and not much more by train. Personally, I would spend time on the west coast rather than in the area between Dublin and Galway. Connemara and The Burren are two unique areas accessible from Galway.
When out west you could also pay a quick visit to the Cliffs of Moher, or make a trip to the Aran Islands.
In Dublin there is a lot of history, Guinness/Jameson Distillery, great pubs etc. And you are not far from the Wicklow Mountains where there is plenty more history and hiking. The Wicklow Mountains is the backdrop to many movies/TV shows that use rugged scenery such as Braveheart and Vikings.
