Personal Investments • Selling spec-id fractional shares on vanguard brokerage

Hi all, possible Vanguard brokerage bug related to selling fractional ETF shares with spec id

Let’s say I have two lots of VTI each 1.250 shares. I enter the “sell ETF” transaction. I need to enter the # of shares being sold. It has to be a whole number (can’t enter 2.5). If I enter 2 and then select 1.250 of lot 1 and .750 of lot 2, I get an error that the quantity doesn’t match the order qty (it does match to 3 decimal places).

So there is no way to sell fractional shares with spec id.

I am aware that if I sell all my shares it will liquidate the fraction in a 2nd transaction. In this case I don’t want to sell all shares.

Has anyone experienced this bug or found a workaround?

Thanks
Nick
If 1.25 is the whole lot, just enter "1". The .25 will liquidate automatically after the market closes. (Or, if you have two lots, 1.3 and 1.5, and you can sell "2". The .3 and .5 will autoliquidate.)

You CAN try stuff like entering a sale of "2", and putting in 1.25 on one lot and 0.75 on another. But Vanguard shows shares to three decimal places but tracks that at 4 or more. You can run into weird problems with floating point rounding.

The people who wrote this interface have obviously never tried to sell.
