Personal Consumer Issues • Water heater flush?

When we had a tank water heater we never did any maintance to it, although maybe that would have been a good idea.

Regarding tankless, we've had Rinnai tankless for 9 years, it's been awesome, the primary reason we got it was to avoid running out of hot water when multiple people are taking showers/baths.

We've flushed our tankless 3 times over the last 9 years, every 2-3 years about.

One of my neighbors has a Rinnai tankless as well, I think his is almost 20 years old at this point. When I was talking with him before I got ours I was asking about flushing/maintenance and he told me he's never done anything to his

I would guess that flushing more often is probably a good idea if one lives in a place with hard water (high mineral content) as that could lead to mineral buildup
It is far more important to perform routine maintenance on a tankless water heater vs a tank water heater. The tankless heater has to heat the water running through it in a very short time, so any deposits that slow down the heat exchange can have a significant effect on the efficiency and the life expectancy of the unit.
