I believe this is termed "refacing". It's a great way to keep the original cabinet boxes, especially if they're high quality. I'd also suggest looking locally for a source of custom doors. For each of our current home and a previous one, the boxes were made by one local cabinet shop and the doors were sourced (by those cabinet shops) from other local shops that only made cabinet doors.I don’t like the style of my door fronts. So if I was going to do anything, I’d go online and order new shaker style doors in the color I want. They have sites that let you specify everything, size, hinge layout, full overlay or inlay etc. so I’d just need to refinish/paint the frames of the boxes, then install new doors.
