I've been very happy with Schwab as my new i401k provider. I was able to transfer one of the accounts in kind from Vanguard to Schwab before the deadline and it has been great.
Unfortunately Vanguard repeatedly messed up in completing the transfer of the second account to Schwab. And even after spending hours on the phone with them and exchanging secure messages with them, they weren't able to fix things in time. The people you talk to on the phone at Vanguard do not have a functional working relationship with the people in the back office. So even though I did everything I could to avoid it, one of my accounts did get transferred to Ascensus.
Ascensus has been horrible. Major issues gaining account access. The customer service people are nice but can't do much themselves. They say they need intervention by management, and management is nonresponsive. So I'm still working on trying to get away from Ascensus.
I realize that nobody is perfect, but so far Ascensus has been the worst investment services firm I've dealt with (not counting banks.)
I'd suggest that with Ascensus, the main actionable item is to get your money away from them to another better firm.
