Personal Investments • Breaking up with advisor - Next steps

Hi,

Thinking of parting ways with my financial advisor. 1% + fees for 3 years now; fees are nagging away at me :)

Some questions:

1. They're holding 15+ separate mutual funds/ETFs in their brokerage. At termination would they likely just lump sum the account balance to me and I would pay any taxes next year? I would then transfer this balance into my low-cost ETF portfolio. If I'm in VTI and VXUS in my Vanguard brokerage, could a 'transfer in kind' move apply here?

2. There are 1-2 instances where I anticipate I'd like some financial advice over the next year. Besides this forum :D , is there a good resource to find fee-based (per project) fiduciary advisors? I imagine this would cost less than my annual advisor fees (not to mention the opportunity cost over the long-term with the cost of fees) and their guidance has been pretty flimsy in the past.

Thank you in advance. :beer
OP does not specify if this is an IRA or a taxable account.
This impacts whether taxes might be owed related to the move.
