I went to work for a CPA firm. I came to it with my own set of clients (four or five) which I kept separate and maintained on my own. It’s not a terrible idea to have an attorney look over anything significant you are asked to sign, or to negotiate major life events like home purchases, prenups, new jobs, severance, what have you.
I’ve been reading on BH about various employment termination events where people don’t even try to negotiate severance or evaluate their rights under the ADEA for example. They just sign whatever they are asked to. Same with negotiating employment contracts. Helps if someone at least explains the provisions to you.
If I hear the phrase, “it’s standard” one more time…
No it isn’t, get it checked.
One of the partners was apparently concerned I might leave some day and take some of their clients with me.
He wanted me to sign a non-compete agreement that was, of course, 100% one-sided in their favor.
I kept resisting and saying that I'd have to hire a lawyer to review for my benefit before I'd sign it.
He kept asking and I kept resisting until he finally gave up.
The ironic thing in all of this is that I never did any business on my won with any of their clients, but I brought to the CPA firm all my clients in some way or another.
